“We are Now For Sale at Schoolkids Records.”: Jack Vigliatura’s Letter Home, February 20, 1992

In this candid and lighthearted letter from late in February of 1992, Jack Vigliatura writes home to close friend Mary Shortt with a mix of excitement, anxiety, and classic college humor. He kicks off the letter with the thrilling news that his band’s music is finally for sale at Schoolkids Records. Between joking about potential nightmare plane seatmates and sharing his current alternative rock music recommendations, Jack offers a snapshot of undergraduate life in the early ’90s.

Mary,

Not much news here except, WE ARE NOW FOR SALE AT “SCHOOLKIDS RECORDS.” It’s really great – we’re all very happy and we often catch ourselves wandering in there just to see it on the shelf. It’s cool.

Anyway everything is set for my trip. I leave Gainesville at 11:00 AM, fly to Tampa then leave Tampa at noon for Albany, NY. I should arrive in NY at about 4:00. I’ll be home Sunday at about 11:30 PM and then I have TWO MIDTERMS MONDAY MORNING!!! Well, at least I’m not going to be too stressed – jeese.

Although, now that I think of it, the plane ride should give me a good chance to study. But, knowing my luck, I’ll get stuck to some old lady who’s got no teeth and drools as she talks about her millions of grandkids. Or some fat person who stinks so bad I am forced to make use of the paper bag they put on the chair in front of you, have nightmares about them all night and suffer from extreme fatigue during my midterms. Oh well, that’s what makes college great! (?).

I would recommend the purchase of the Sugar Cubes “Life’s Too Good” or “Wait for Joy” or The Pixies “Bossanova.”

Thinking of you. God bless!

Love,

Jack
