In 1995, the indie rock band For Squirrels appeared to be ready to launch out of Gainesville and into the world. But a tragic accident claimed the lives of lead singer Jack Vigliatura, bassist Bill White, and band manager Tim Bender. The accident took place three weeks before the release of For Squirrels’ debut album with Sony 550, titled Example.
Those left behind had their lives forever impacted. The pain of the accident made the story of the band — and the aftermath of the accident — difficult to deal with.
You don’t have to have been a fan of For Squirrels’ music to appreciate their story. It’s one of friendship, faith, perseverance, passion, tragedy, and incredible eeriness. They say time heals, and it’s been nearly three decades since the accident took place, yet the story of the band has never been told in any detail.
Thanks to the willingness of a plethora of people who agreed to be interviewed and share their experiences, the story of life with For Squirrels — and Subrosa — will be told. We have conducted over 60 interviews, collected dozens of old videos, magazines, newspapers, photos, letters written home by band members, and more.
While several producers have expressed interest in telling the story through a documentary or movie, we have created two short videos that just begin to scratch the surface of this story. Our interviews have concluded, so we have started the process of writing a book about For Squirrels and its story and legacy.
The book format will allow us to tell the story in great detail and share the quotes and stories from the people who knew the band best, were impacted by them, and those who to this day struggle to cope with the tragedy.
Who we are is not important. Our goal is to share this story, which is so much bigger than us and music. It’s more fascinating and eerie than one could ever comprehend. We hope that by telling this story, it will prompt the people who loved For Squirrels to listen to their music again… in a much different way (as this story reveals the background and deep meanings of the songs).
And for the people who had never heard of the band until now, we hope it will prompt them to seek out their music and learn more about a group of friends who were on the brink of stardom and had dreams of changing the world for the better before the tragic accident took three precious lives and forever changed countless more.
