This story has never truly been told… until now.

The tragic and inspiring journey of the indie rock band For Squirrels has remained largely untold for more than three decades. Over the past decade, we have conducted countless interviews and collected an extensive archive of articles, photographs, videos, postcards, letters, flyers, and other memorabilia that help illuminate the band’s rise, the devastating events of September 8, 1995, and the surviving members’ efforts to carry on in honor of their fallen friends under the name Subrosa.

Over the years, the vision for how this story should be shared has evolved considerably. We explored a variety of possibilities, from documentary films to novels, and had conversations with industry executives, filmmakers, and publishing professionals about the best medium for telling the story.

What we ultimately discovered is that the story of For Squirrels can only be told authentically through the voices of the people who lived it. Every person touched by the band experienced it differently. Their memories of the music, the performances, the friendships, the promise of what was to come, and the tragedy that changed everything are uniquely their own.

That realization led to The Immortal Dog and Pony Show. While the title may one day serve as the name of a documentary, film, or book, it currently represents something even more important: a growing collection of firsthand stories that together paint the most complete picture of For Squirrels ever assembled. Through these personal accounts, the band’s inspiring, heartbreaking, and often uncanny journey emerges with a depth and honesty that has never before been captured.
