Written from the University of Florida on November 21st, 1991, Jack Vigliatura writes to wish Mary Shortt a belated happy birthday and share concerns about classes and a sick friend, while offering practical advice drawn from his own experience. Jack’s thoughts repeatedly return to family and his eagerness to be home for Thanksgiving—so eager that his books are already packed. The return address on his letter sent home jokingly shows the letter was mailed from Afghanistan.

Mary,
My you look older! Happy Birthday!
I’m now sitting in Economics Wednesday morning and I’m not paying attention to the television (it’s a t.v. course the teacher teaches from t.v.). Your most recent letter is one of the sweetest, lovely letters I have ever received.
I’m sorry I missed your birthday. I hope you had a nice day. Do you have your license now? If not it’s all right just practice and take it again. I think you probably do though, right?
I’ve seen that Succumbs tape and it is very cool.
How is everything there? Tell them I said “hello” and remind Ralph about our talk – I can’t wait (read in sarcastic but nervous manner). I went to see my academic advisor yesterday and I can’t drop Statistics so it looks like I really got to try to bring it up to a “C.” Pray for me.
Travis was really sick and last night he had a really high fever and started to hallucinate about stuff. I’d be sitting at his desk while he was in bed and all of the sudden he’d get up and answer the phone that never rang. Or he’d get up and answer the door that was never knocked. Every time I’d help him back to bed he called me, “Dad.” It was weird. He’s feeling better now but he’s very upset about missing classes the past two days because of all the make up work. I think you know how he feels.
Make sure you get it done quick otherwise you’ll forget and they won’t let you make it up. I know from experience – many times I received zeros on assignments I never made up.
Well now, it’s only 8 days until Thanksgiving and unfortunately, Jack has already packed his books in his suitcase to be sure they are ready to go. I can’t wait to come home.
Love,
Jack
